Best Social Media Management Tools in 2026 (UK & EU): Why Metricool Beat Buffer, Planable and the Enterprise Suites

Social media management tools all do the same three things (schedule posts across networks, show you what worked, and let more than one person touch the account without chaos) and they have never been more alike on the surface. What separates them now is how they charge (per brand, per channel, per workspace or per seat), which networks they actually support (LinkedIn Company Pages, Threads and Bluesky are the 2026 tests), whether approvals and analytics are included or sold back to you as add-ons, and how well they plug into the rest of your stack. An API and an MCP server matter more every month. This comparison covers nine platforms for a UK or EU business or agency. Four of them (Buffer, Planable, Metricool and DemandBird) we ran ourselves, at length, before choosing. The other five are researched, not tested, and labelled as such: assessed on publicly available pricing, feature sets and third-party reviews.

Metricool: the winner

We spent a long time with four platforms (Buffer, Planable, Metricool and DemandBird) on ease of use, features, AI, automation and cost, and Metricool is the one we kept.

The pricing model is the story. Metricool charges per brand, and a brand is every network that brand has: Facebook, Instagram, Threads, X, Bluesky, TikTok, LinkedIn profiles and Company Pages, Google Business Profile, Pinterest, YouTube and Twitch. Starter is €20 a month month-to-month, €16 on annual billing, for five of them. The same five brands with, say, six channels each is thirty channels on Buffer, around $200 a month on the Team plan. Starter also includes things the others charge extra for or don't do at all: 100 competitor profiles, unlimited analytics history, a unified inbox, Facebook/Google/TikTok Ads reporting and PDF/PowerPoint client reports. Advanced (€54 / €43) adds team roles, a post-approval system, the REST API, custom report templates and Looker Studio.

Then there's the MCP server. Metricool publishes an open-source one (mcp-metricool, hosted at ai.metricool.com/mcp) that works on any plan, including Free: scheduling, analytics, best-time-to-post and ad campaigns exposed to Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, n8n, Make and Zapier. That is the most generous automation offer in this comparison and, for a team that already works with AI agents, the single feature that decided it for us. The AI writing assistant is credit-metered per brand and fine.

The honest caveats: approvals and the API only start at €54, which is the tier a client-facing agency will actually need; pricing is in EUR from the UK with no GBP option; X is a €5 add-on per connected Premium account; and Trustpilot (3.9/5 on 645 reviews) pairs praise for fast, human support with complaints about silent annual auto-renewals and a no-refund policy. Set a calendar reminder before your renewal date.

DemandBird: the B2B runner-up

DemandBird is the newest tool here (founded December 2025 in Portland, Oregon, launched May 2026) and the one we'd point a B2B marketing team at if LinkedIn is where their audience lives. It supports LinkedIn personal profiles and, since shortly after launch, Company Pages (that was the gap when we tested it; it has closed), plus X, Instagram, Facebook, Threads, Bluesky, YouTube and Substack. The product is built for several humans publishing consistently rather than one person feeding a queue: AI ideation turns a concept into drafts and auto-adapts one post per platform in the brand's voice, content pillars keep the mix honest, a team engagement feed gets colleagues amplifying each other, and review and approval with client sign-off is built in from the Business plan.

Pricing is per workspace in USD with generous seats: Pro at $21.75 a month on annual billing (about $29 monthly) for 5 accounts and 20 team members; Business at $36.75 (~$49) for 10 accounts, 50 members, approvals, Company Pages and the REST API plus MCP server (app.demandbird.com/mcp, around 15 tools); Agency at $111.75 / $149 for 20 accounts, unlimited users, white-label and client pipeline management. Seven-day trial, thirty-day full refund, no minimum term.

It loses to Metricool on breadth (no inbox, no competitor analysis, no ads reporting, no Pinterest or Google Business Profile, no free plan) and on price at the entry level, and it is too young to have a Trustpilot or G2 record at all. It gains points nobody else earns: the founding team's engagement, and Alex Boyd's in particular, was the best of any vendor we assessed. Ask them for something and it tends to appear.

Planable: the best workflow, the wrong owner

Planable was a great product when we ran it and the approval workflow is still the best in the category: unlimited users on every plan, approvals from none through optional, required and multi-level, guest approvers who need no account, annotations, Slack and email notifications. If your bottleneck is getting a client or a legal team to sign off on posts, nothing here does it better. Pro ($49 annual / ~$59 monthly per workspace) includes a public API and an MCP connector.

The problem is everything around the product. SE Ranking bought Planable in August 2025, and SE Ranking plus Planable was, for a while, an excellent combined solution. Since then the pricing, renewals and general commercial strategy have become a mess: analytics ($12–14) and the social inbox ($7.50–9) are per-workspace add-ons on every tier, so the real price of a working Pro workspace is nearer $82 a month; posts are capped per month (60 on Basic, 150 on Pro); and our experience, echoed by the most recent Trustpilot reviews ("every feature is now paid separately"), is of a company that has lost its way and, right now, doesn't appear to care much about existing customers. Trustpilot overall is still 4.4/5 on 71 reviews, which tells you how good the product was.

Buffer: simple, and expensive for it

Buffer is the tool most people started with, and it is still the simplest to use. It deserves credit for two 2026 moves: a public GraphQL API, CLI and official remote MCP server launched in May, free on every plan including Free, and an AI assistant that is also free everywhere. It supports the widest network list here, Mastodon included.

But the field has caught up and overtaken it on functionality, and beats it commercially too. Buffer charges per channel: Essentials $6 a channel monthly ($5 annual) for one user with no approvals, Team $12 ($10) for unlimited users, a single approve/reject step and branded reports. Five channels on Team is $60 a month; ten is $120, for less than Metricool gives you at €20. There is no competitor analysis, no multi-level or guest approval, no white-label, and analytics stop at cross-channel comparison. Trustpilot is 3.4/5 on 117 reviews with 44% one-star: failed posts and channel disconnections first, "does it justify the cost" second. That was our conclusion too.

The rest of the field (not tested by us)

Vista Social: the agency toolkit with MCP built in

New York, founded 2022, a small remote team by its own description. Approvals (single and multi-stage), client profile connection, a shared inbox, competitor reports and white-label setup on Scale make it the most agency-shaped tool here after Planable, and Ask Vista's MCP connectors on every paid plan let an AI assistant publish, approve and report. Professional is $79 a month or $63.17 annual for 15 profiles and two users; full X publishing is a $29 add-on per account; USD only. The caution is Trustpilot, which shows a guideline-breach notice instead of a score over 78 reviews, with billing surprises the recent one-star theme. (We use an affiliate link; it doesn't affect the verdict.)

SocialBee: evergreen content on a budget

Cluj-Napoca, owned by the cPanel/Plesk group WebPros. The evergreen-content engine: posts live in categories and re-queue automatically with variations, and its AI Copilot builds the whole schedule. Coverage is wide for the money (Bluesky, Google Business Profile and LinkedIn pages on the $29 Bootstrap plan) and approvals start at $49. There is no public API ("long-term roadmap, no timeline"), no MCP, no competitor analysis, and a single user until the $99 plan. Trustpilot 3.8 (on socialbee.io, 57 reviews).

Sprout Social: the enterprise suite

The deepest inbox, review management, listening (a paid add-on, G2's #1), competitor reports and integrations with Salesforce, Zendesk and HubSpot. It charges per seat (Essentials $99 monthly / $79 annual, Professional $299 annual for approvals, Advanced $399 for the API), so three people on Professional is near $900 a month. No official MCP server. Trustpilot 1.7/5 on 85 reviews, 71% one-star, almost all about annual contracts that renewed after cancellation attempts; G2 (4.4, ~7,400) is the other half of the picture.

Hootsuite: the incumbent, rebuilt for AI

Rebuilt around its "Wisdom" AI agent and official MCP connectors in June 2026, and still the broadest platform for large teams: listening, employee advocacy, a WhatsApp inbox, Bluesky publishing and listening. It is per user from $99 a month on annual billing (monthly rates aren't published; third parties say ~$149), and approval workflows only arrive on Advanced at $399 a user. Its Trustpilot is the worst here (1.3/5 on 554 reviews, 69% one-star, accounts closed years ago still being charged) and the vendor answers about 6% of them.

Later: Instagram-first, influencer-ready

The Instagram-and-TikTok visual planner with Link in Bio on every plan and, at enterprise level, a full influencer-marketing suite. It dropped X in 2023, has no API or MCP, caps posts on its lower tiers (30 per profile a month on the $25 Starter), and its Trustpilot (1.5/5 on 349 reviews) is a wall of surprise auto-renewal charges and refused refunds. Read it before entering a card.

Bottom line

  • Most UK/EU businesses and agencies: Metricool. Every network per brand, competitor and ads analytics included, MCP on every plan, from €20. (We use an affiliate link; it doesn't affect the verdict.)
  • B2B teams living on LinkedIn: DemandBird (Company Pages, team publishing, approvals plus API and MCP from $37, and a founding team that responds)
  • Client sign-off is your bottleneck: Planable, for the workflow, with eyes open on the add-on pricing and the ownership
  • The simplest possible scheduler with few channels: Buffer, but count the channels first
  • An agency running many clients on a US-dollar budget, with an AI assistant in the loop: Vista Social, eyes open on the Trustpilot notice
  • Evergreen content recycling on a budget: SocialBee
  • Enterprise listening and customer care: Sprout Social or Hootsuite, and read their Trustpilot pages before signing an annual contract
  • Instagram-first creators and influencer programmes: Later
