Namecheap (Phoenix, Arizona; founded 2000 by Richard Kirkendall; about 2,600 staff in 18 countries, with much of its support team in Ukraine; 24 million domains under management; a majority stake was agreed to CVC Capital Partners in September 2025 at roughly $1.5 billion, with Kirkendall now Founder and Hillan Klein CEO) is where a large share of small businesses end up, and the fundamentals explain why. WHOIS privacy is free for life on every eligible domain (Nominet redaction applies to .co.uk instead), BasicDNS is free with DNSSEC, there are 100 free email forwards per domain, account 2FA is TOTP or a FIDO security key with no SMS option, and leaving is unlock plus auth code with no fee. The API is real but gated (you need 20 domains, or $50 of balance or spend) and there is an official Terraform provider; no first-party MCP server. Bulk transfer handles 50 domains at a time. The pricing page shows the renewal column next to the sale column, which most rivals do not.

Prices in GBP as shown to a UK visitor on 5 September 2026 (VAT basis not stated on the page): .com £8.12 in year one on the current sale (£11.07 list), renewing at £13.66, so a 68% step up from the sale price and 23% from list; .co.uk £5.16 then £7.38; .io £25.85 then £56.16. Transferring a .com in costs a renewal year; .co.uk transfers are free and add no year. A test checkout on 7 September 2026 pre-ticked only the free privacy and auto-renew, but also dropped a disabled £0 Stellar hosting trial into the cart as its own line and listed nine add-on tiles beneath it; nothing paid was pre-selected, and the cart shows the retail price struck through rather than the renewal. There is no phone support at all (24/7 live chat and tickets, with Risk Management reachable only by email), and that maps onto the two themes in Namecheap's 1-star reviews (Trustpilot 4.2 on about 21,800 invited reviews, 15% one-star): accounts locked pending security checks with slow resolution, and auto-renew charging 30 days before expiry with a short refund window. On Ukraine: Namecheap told customers registered in Russia in March 2022 that it would stop serving them; its knowledge base (updated May 2026) now says domain registrations, renewals and transfers are available to Russian customers "in line with ICANN requirements", while hosting, SSL and marketing products remain blocked. Russia remains heavily restricted. Its sister brand Spaceship (same Phoenix address, trading since 2022) sells .com at $8.88 rising to $9.98 and .co.uk at a flat $5.42, in USD.
