Hover
Tucows' retail registrar: flat, honest pricing (.com $18.99 to register and renew, .co.uk $10.99), free WHOIS privacy and mandatory two-step login, but at a premium price, with no API, paid email forwarding, and a small, angry Trustpilot profile the company does not answer.
How we testHover (Tucows.com Co., Toronto; parent Tucows Inc., NASDAQ: TCX, ICANN-accredited since 1999 and owner of Enom, OpenSRS and Ascio; Hover launched 2008; David Woroch replaced Elliot Noss as CEO in November 2025) built its reputation a decade ago on simple pricing and no upsell. The pricing half is still true: .com is $18.99 to register, renew or transfer, .co.uk $10.99 flat, .io $74.99 flat, with volume discounts on renewals from ten domains upward; WHOIS privacy is included and on by default; transfer-out is free; two-step sign-in is mandatory on every account (email code by default, TOTP optional, no hardware keys). The no-upsell half has quietly gone: the current site makes no such claim, and the checkout offers paid mailboxes and a free-first-year .online bundle that renews at $36.99.
What a UK agency will notice is what is missing. There is no API at all (the help centre search returns nothing; Tucows' APIs are wholesale-only), so Hover cannot be automated. Email forwarding is not free: Hover "doesn't provide free email service", so a forward means a $30-a-year mailbox. DNSSEC is DS-record entry only when you use third-party DNS; Hover does not sign its own zones. Redemption after expiry costs $175 on top of the renewal. Support runs 8am to 8pm Eastern seven days (1pm to 1am UK) by phone, chat and ticket, with an international freephone number but no UK one. Hover bills in USD with no VAT line. Trustpilot is 1.3 on 120 unprompted reviews, 85% one-star and unanswered by the company. It is a small sample that we show for completeness, and the 2026 themes are default auto-renew disputes, instant suspension when a card fails, and unreachable phone lines. Vistaprint's (2023) and Enom's retail (2024) domain customers were migrated into Hover, which may explain some of the noise. Hover runs an affiliate programme on impact.com; Saaskly has applied and any link will be disclosed on this page if approved.
Not yet tested by Saaskly: assessed on published pricing, documentation and third-party reviews.

*Renewal premium: how much more the second year of a .com costs than the first, as a percentage of the first-year price. Registrars advertise the first year; you pay the renewal every year after. 0% means the advertised price is the real price. Prices are per domain per year as shown to a UK visitor on the research date, in the currency the registrar bills UK customers in; see each profile for the VAT basis.
**Blocks AI agents by default: whether the registrar's bundled DNS/CDN stops AI agents (chat fetchers, browser-use agents) reaching customer sites unless the owner changes a setting. Recorded only where the vendor documents such a default (Cloudflare, from 15 September 2026, on pages that carry ads).
†Trustpilot: uk.trustpilot.com TrustScore and review count on the research date. Two profiles are not representative of the registrar and are shown for completeness: Cloudflare (1.4) is mostly non-customers blocked by CAPTCHAs on other companies' websites, and Hover (1.3) is 120 unprompted reviews the company has not answered.
