How we testCamtasia (TechSmith, East Lansing, Michigan; bootstrapped and privately held since 1987) is not trying to be a film editor: it records screen, webcam, microphone and system audio on separate tracks, then edits with SmartFocus auto-zoom, cursor effects, callouts, quizzes and SCORM export, the product-demo and training niche where it has few peers. Essentials (£159.78 a year) bundles the Editor, Audiate (text-based audio editing, filler-word and noise removal, speech-to-text) and Snagit; Create (£221.18) adds AI script tools and 200+ ElevenLabs voices; Pro (£532.09) adds AI avatars, translation and dubbing into seven languages, image generation, 100M+ stock assets and, unusually, unlimited AI use with no credits. Business licences are £175.88 per user per year with volume pricing from ten seats.
The commercial story is the sore point: TechSmith abolished perpetual licences on 12 February 2025 (Camtasia 2024 owners are supported to end-2026), there is no month-to-month option at all, and the discounted "Legacy Licence" subscriptions were raised on 11 June 2026. There is no SSO or SCIM ("on the roadmap"), no public API, no Linux or mobile editor, and colour tools are basic. Trustpilot is 4.1 on 310 reviews; the 1-star themes are crashes after updates, duplicate billing and anger at the forced move to subscription, balanced by praise for support.
