Still the most mature enterprise virtualization stack, and under Broadcom the most expensive and least partner-friendly platform in this comparison by a wide margin.
Technically, VMware Cloud Foundation 9.x remains the reference platform: ESXi, vSAN, NSX, VCF Operations and Automation, Cloud Director for multi-tenant service providers, and the deepest hardware/ISV certification list anywhere. Commercially, Broadcom's post-acquisition model has been the single biggest driver of every other product on this page.
Perpetual licences ended in early 2024; everything is subscription-only, bundled into VCF or VVF, priced per physical core with a 16-core-per-CPU minimum (a 72-core-per-order minimum was introduced in April 2025 and reportedly relaxed later that year). Broadcom does not publish list prices; advisors estimate VCF at roughly US$350 per core per year list. Reported increases range from around 300% typical to over 1,000% for European cloud providers (per CISPE), with a Forrester client citing 500%. The partner channel was gutted (white-label and Advantage VCSP programmes closed October 2025, the VCSP programme was terminated in Europe in January 2026) and CISPE filed a fresh competition complaint in March 2026. Legacy vSphere Standard/Enterprise Plus are capped at 8 U3 with no version 9. Free ESXi returned in April 2025 for labs only.
