Pandle
Free forever, and the free plan is the real product: unlimited users, bank feeds, VAT returns to HMRC, Making Tax Digital for Income Tax submissions, multi-currency, Stripe feeds, quotes, projects and cashflow, all for nothing, with data on UK servers and a Trustpilot 4.3. Pro is £5 a month for live chat, stock, PayPal feeds and multi-company. What to know: no payroll, no CIS yet, no GoCardless, no phone line, and the company that makes it is an accountancy practice.
How we testPandle Ltd is a Wirral company that is, at Companies House, the same legal entity as The Accountancy Partnership, the fixed-fee practice that built it and renamed the company in 2017. That explains the business model: the software is free because it feeds the practice, and Pandle Pro at £5 a month plus VAT is the only thing it charges for.
Prices read on 8 September 2026. Free includes what most vendors charge for: unlimited users with permissions, Open Banking feeds through Plaid (11,000 feeds, by Pandle's count), receipt uploads, quotes and invoices, recurring transactions, bank rules, multiple currencies, Stripe feeds, projects, a mileage tracker, cashflow forecasting, tax estimates and reminders, business reports, MTD VAT return submissions and MTD Income Tax submissions. We checked the plan table in a browser because the research had found a conflicting claim: VAT and Income Tax submissions are ticked in the Free column. Pro, on a rolling month with no annual option and no card for the 14-day trial, adds live chat with bookkeepers, premium invoice templates, stock control, PayPal feeds and multi-company management. HMRC lists Pandle on the VAT list and on the Income Tax list as a free product for sole traders and UK property, as record-keeping software and as bridging software.
Data is on UK servers on Google Cloud, stated in Pandle's own privacy policy, which is a clearer answer than most of the field gives. There is a documented API with OAuth and webhooks, a partner programme for accountants that lets them switch between clients' books, and iOS and Android apps. Trustpilot is 4.3 on 1,357 unprompted reviews, 85 per cent five-star, with July 2026 one-stars about an outage that stopped invoices going out, sign-up problems and bank feeds pulling wrong balances.
What it does not do is the list a growing company will read first: no payroll and no partner for it, CIS "currently under development" with a manual workaround in the help centre, no GoCardless, no Corporation Tax or Companies House filing (that is what the practice sells), no MCP server, no published certifications, and support by email unless you pay for chat. Pandle is the best free set of books in the UK, and that is exactly what it is.
Not yet tested by Saaskly: assessed on published pricing, HMRC's software lists, vendor documentation and third-party reviews.

*Scored plan: the limited-company tier the score is set on (the cheapest plan a VAT-registered company with a few staff can run on), per month at the renewal price once any introductory discount ends, in the currency the vendor shows a UK visitor on the research date; see each profile for the VAT basis, the introductory offer and what the tier above adds.
**Owned in: where the company that owns the provider answers to. A US-owned provider is subject to US law (including the CLOUD Act) wherever the data centre is; a UK data centre is not the same thing as UK jurisdiction. "Data location" records where the ledger is stored.
