# Proxmox VE review: pricing, pros and cons

> Saaskly verdict: **4.5/5**. Open-source KVM + LXC virtualization platform with clustering, Ceph, SDN and backup built in: the clearest, cheapest exit from VMware for most teams.

## Pros and cons

**Pros**

- Lowest realistic cost of any platform here, with transparent per-socket pricing and no feature gating
- Built-in ESXi import wizard plus 9.2’s load balancer and Datacenter Manager remove the last "but it’s not vCenter" objections for most SMB/mid-market estates
- Huge community, fast release cadence, mature Ceph/ZFS/backup ecosystem

**Cons**

- No tenant-facing self-service portal, quotas or billing on its own: service providers add MultiPortal (or WHMCS modules / Stack Console)
- KVM/LXC only; no public-cloud integration or hybrid bursting
- Support is ticket-based from Proxmox Server Solutions GmbH, with no field services or large partner ecosystem

## Our review

Proxmox Virtual Environment bundles KVM virtual machines, LXC containers, HA clustering, Ceph and ZFS storage, software-defined networking and (via Proxmox Backup Server) enterprise backup into one Debian-based platform with a single web UI. Every feature is in the free build; subscriptions buy access to the stable Enterprise repository and support tickets, priced per CPU socket with no per-core arithmetic. Since 8.2 it has shipped a built-in ESXi import wizard, and the 9.x line has closed the two gaps enterprises used to cite: a DRS-style Dynamic Load Balancer (9.2, May 2026) and multi-cluster central management via Proxmox Datacenter Manager 1.0 (December 2025).

What it does not do on its own is multi-tenancy or billing. Pair it with MultiPortal (joint winner) and the combination matches the full CMP feature set of the integrated stacks at a fraction of the cost. Based on running Proxmox in production, the cost/feature balance and the straightforward VMware migration path are a first-hand assessment, not a desk conclusion.
