## Pros and cons

**Pros**

- No licence cost and proven at very large scale by public cloud providers
- Manages multiple hypervisors, including existing vSphere clusters, easing staged migrations
- Mature tenant/network model with official IaC tooling

**Cons**

- Steep learning curve and operational overhead
- Billing requires third-party integration
- Commercial support ecosystem is thin, effectively one vendor

## Pricing

Month-to-month price first (what you pay without committing), then the annual-commit rate.

- **Software**: $0/yr on an annual commitment; month-to-month price not published
  - Includes: Apache 2.0, free

## Our review

CloudStack is a turnkey open-source orchestration platform with a mature multi-tenant model (domains, accounts, projects, roles, quotas, per-tenant VPCs), a self-service UI, and a full REST API mirrored by an official Terraform provider, Ansible collection and CloudMonkey CLI. Unlike most platforms here it can drive several hypervisors at once (KVM, vSphere, XCP-ng/XenServer, bare metal) and since 4.19 it includes native VMware-to-KVM VM import, improved again in 4.22 LTS (November 2025). The built-in Usage Server emits per-account usage records but there is no billing UI; providers pair it with HostBill, Ubersmith, StackBill/Stack Console or WHMCS. Commercial support is essentially ShapeBlue.
